The first SMS message was sent on December 3, 1992, by Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old engineer, to Richard Jarvis, a Vodafone employee, wishing him “Merry Christmas.” At that time, SMS was limited to alphanumeric characters and had a maximum length of 160 characters.
